Authentic horn is incredibly popular in many parts of Asia as it’s believed to be a remedy for a variety of ailments and diseases, including cancer.

As both its acquisition and trade are illegal, the black market for the material has boomed while rhino populations continue to dwindle.

The two biologists who are currently working on the lab-made alternative say that they’re committed to creating a substitute that resembles the original as closely as possible.

Special attention is being paid to unique DNA information and molecular composition to increase the product’s desirability to consumers, but critics say that it won’t matter.
