Mexican protesters clash with police during president's convocation speech

Three police officers were wounded on Friday (January 02) in the southwestern Mexican state of Oaxaca after clashes with protesters who had gathered outside a rally headlined by Mexican President Enrique Pena Nieto. The president was on hand to launch his reform agenda for the new year including new energy projects.

The protesters were organized by the teachers' union, the National Syndicate of Education Workers (SNTE).

Hurling rocks at anti-riot police and burning tires, the protesters came out to voice their opposition to Pena Nieto's reform from three years back that took power away from Mexico's powerful teacher's union in addition to legislation aimed at opening up the energy sector.

But the protesters voiced their frustration over a wide net of problems in Mexico, including the high-profile case of 43 missing apprentice teachers in the neighboring Mexican state of Guerrero.
