Church offers hope for family of missing students in Mexico

Some of the family members from Mexico's 43 missing students gathered for mass in the restive state of Guerrero on Monday (December 22) as they turn to their faith to call for the return of their loved ones who were abducted by corrupt police in a feared massacre.

Following months of violent protests in Guerrero, the mass in the town of Tixtla where many of the missing students are from was a sombre occasion.

"They (relatives of missing) expressed their pain because their children are missing and they have called on us to pray so that wherever their children are that they are well, that they are protected and that they could be found alive," said Acapulco Archbishop Carlos Garfias.

In November, Pope Francis expressed his sorrow at what he said is clearly the murder of the missing students.

Apostolic nuncio Christophe Pierre said messages of grief from family members will be sent to the pontiff.
