Hostages seen running from cafe under seige

Hostages run out of a cafe in Sydney that is still under siege.

One man... then another, were seen running towards heavily armed police. Then, a man wearing a Lindt cafe apron ran out a side door, possibly an employee.

A short while later, two women were seen running- both also appeared to be employees. It's unclear if they were released by their captor, or if they escaped.

Scores of police are on the scene in Sydney's Martin Place district. The area around the building has been cordoned off for blocks.

Onlookers say the situation is unprecedented.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SYDNEY RESIDENT JOSHUA MARTIN SAYING:

"It's probably the first time in Australian history that something this major in regards to a terrorist threat has happened."

Police say they are in contact with the armed hostage taker, and say while there may be some indication of what his demands are, they are confirming this information.
