Authorities from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration, or NOAA are investigating the death of a dolphin that washed up on the shore of Orange Beach, Alabama with a hunting arrow lodged in its body.

Following the analysis of the dead body of the dolphin, experts say that it may have survived for up to five days after being shot. Ultimately, it succumbed to an infection that resulted from the wound.

Officials from the NOAA are also investigating the recent death of a pregnant bottlenose dolphin that was found on the Gulf Coast of Miramar Beach, Florida with a gunshot wound.

People who are found guilty of violating the Marine Mammal Protection Act of 1972 face up to a year in jail along with up to a hundred thousand dollars in fines.

Human related dolphin deaths have been on the rise in the northern Gulf of Mexico, and according to one report, most of the incidents stem from fishermen competing with dolphins for fish.
