USA: YALE STUDENTS PROTEST AGAINST RACISM
There have been countless protests in the United States over the past few weeks prompted by several cases of unarmed African American men being killed at the hands of police officers. Yale University’s black student alliance has also joined the movement, to demand justice and fight racial inequality, and the campaign is drawing growing support online.
The union has started a Tumblr blog called “To my unborn son” with the stated aim being to “address what it means to be black men in America” and to express their condolences to the parents of 18 year old Michael Brown who was shot dead by a white police officer. The photo campaign sees students posing with messages to their unborn sons. The blog hosts all manner of messages, although most are warnings, like here with this man: “if you wish to survive, you must be beyond reproach”.
The photos are also being widely shared on Twitter, generating a lot of praise. Social networkers view this campaign as an intelligent way of protesting a social system that sees the black community treated differently, unfairly, and an original alternative to the ongoing street protests.
And some have taken the initiative to the microblogging site, with a lot of American web users now posting under the #tomyunbornson hashtag denouncing the endemic racism in the United States. The posts reflect a certain pessimism and negativity for future generations.
