An immense grotto, protected from the world for 20,000 years because the rock ceiling at its entrance caved in. It is a sanctuary incrusted with crystals and filled with the petrified remains of giant mammals from the Ice Age. However, these are not the only treasures that this unique place offers us.

In 1994, in the south of France, the speleologists who discovered the cave were astounded to see spectacular works of art realized more than 30,000 years ago - almost twice as old as the oldest cave paintings discovered until then. These exceptional drawings and art works were created in the time when Neanderthals still roamed Earth, and when cave bears, mammoths and lions were the dominant species in the European continent.

Since the cave's discovery, only a few people have been allowed to enter it and the masterpieces upon its walls have been sheltered from view. Werner Herzog gained exclusive access to film inside the cave. With his 3D cameras, Herzog has captured all the beauty of these marvels in one of the most grandiose sites that exists. Herzog takes us on a gripping visual journey to meet our distant ancestors, discover the birth of art, the symbolic power of this place, and encounter the strange characters who now live nearby.
