Sisters become national heroines after fighting off sexual-harassers on Indian bus

Two sisters have gained international recognition and respect after standing up to a group of men who allegedly sexually harassed them on a bus.

University students Pooja, 19, and Aarti Kumar, 22, were returning home from Rohtak Government College in India when a group of three men started making unwanted advances towards the girls.

The men became aggressive after being rejected, at which point the girls decided to fight fire with fire.

Speaking to MailOnline, Pooja said: ‘We encounter these kinds of incidents on a daily basis. It was only when the boys started misbehaving with a pregnant woman that we resorted to this.

‘We really thought to these guys a lesson and beat them up. We wanted to show that we girls are not weak and capable to defending ourselves.’

The video shows other passengers sitting idly by as the girls wrestle with the three men, repeatedly striking one with a belt while he holds one of the sisters by her throat.

After getting kicked off the bus for the commotion they were causing, the sisters claim the three men followed and continue to shout abuse at them until they threw a brick at the attackers, causing them to run away.

The men, who are believed to be trainee soldiers, have been arrested after the video went viral, and the bus conductor and driver have both been suspended for not reporting the incident to the police.

Despite the dangers they faced, the girls are not ashamed of their vigilante behaviour.

‘I am not regretting it. I did the right thing,’ said Pooja.
