U.S. President Barack Obama pardoned "Cheese," America's top turkey, as well as alternate, "Mac" at a ceremony at the White House a day ahead of the Thanksgiving holiday.
U.S. presidents have been pardoning turkeys since the 1800s as part of the country's national Thanksgiving holiday, when roasted turkey is the traditional main course.
Obama chided his detractors saying, "some will call it amnesty."
Mac and Cheese are both males born in July who hail from Cooper Farms in Oakwood, Ohio.
Mac is a "feather shaker" who weighs in a 47 pounds. Cheese is a "grand champion" who weights in at 49 pounds.
They will be on display for visitors at their permanent home at Morven Park's Turkey Hill, the historic turkey farm located at the home of former Virginia Governor Westmoreland Davis (1918-1922) in Leesburg, Virginia.
