Dutch Zoo Welcomes Rare Polar Bear Triplets

The U.S. Endangered Species Act classifies polar bears as threatened by extinction, mostly due to climate change. In what can be considered a slight boost for the polar bear count, the Ouwehands Dierenpark zoo in the Netherlands recently welcomed not one, but three cubs.

The mother, named Freedom, gave birth to the triplets on Saturday. According to zoo officials, all three cubs are doing well.
Zoo keepers are excited about the rare triplets and are monitoring Freedom and her cubs continuously.
Video cameras are set up to record their bonding time. The proud mom and her new babies are spending their days in the polar bear nursery and everyone can witness the heartwarming interaction by viewing live streaming footage on the zoo’s website.
The father of the triplets is now staying at the Yorkshire Wildlife Park in England. Named Victor, he is a critical part of the European captive breeding program, as he has, thus far, produced 16 cubs.
As for Freedom and the three babies, the Dutch zoo hopes they will be taken outside sometime in the Spring of 2015.
