During international travels, you’re bound to discover some seemingly unusual concoctions. The main ingredient in an increasingly popular drink in Peru is frogs.

You may have last seen a frog in a zoo or in a pond. In Peru, however, it can be find in an increasingly popular drink.

Locals in the Andean mountains often place the creatures into a blender and pour the pureed frogs in beverages, as they believe the drinks cure a number of ailments.

The so-called frog juice isn’t just made in private residences. It’s also prepared and served by street vendors and inside cafes. Vendor Maria Elena Cruz, who runs a food stand in Lima presents the beverage to customers.

She said “Frog juice is good for anemia, bronchitis, bones, the brain, fatigue, stress and it is mostly children, adults, persons with anemia, respiratory issues and sometimes tuberculosis.”

The beverage also has a reputation for increasing sex drive. Although the juice is an aspect of Andean culture, medical experts say there is no scientific evidence that supports it is a cure for health ailments.

Drink makers use a species of water frog that is critically endangered. The beverage is often served in juice form, but it can also be made to have a thicker consistency, similar to a smoothie or milkshake.

Oftentimes, the frogs are removed from an aquarium, killed and skinned in front of customers prior to being placed in a blender. Additional ingredients like honey and carrots are added to the mix.
