France detains suspect in 1980 Paris synagogue bombing

The suspect in a 1980 synagogue bombing is awaiting trial in Paris after being extradited from Canada.

Lebanese-Canadian Hassan Diab arrived in Paris Saturday.

The bombing he's accused of killed four people outside a synagogue in the wealthy 16th arrondissement in Paris on the final day of a Jewish festival.

His lawyer, Stephane Bonifassi, says his client maintains his innocence.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) LAWYER ACTING FOR HASSAN DIAB, STEPHANE BONIFASSI, SAYING:

"He has always claimed and he will keep on claiming that he is innocent, that he's got nothing to do with this attack."

Canadian police arrested Diab in 2008. He was released under judicial supervision while fighting his extradition.

Diab has said evidence against him was based on a flawed handwriting analysis comparing his writing with that found on a Paris hotel registration card.
