Children lie wounded after a suicide bomber dressed as a student killed dozens at a school assembly in northeastern Nigeria -- in a territory close to the stronghold of Boko Haram militants.

Hospital officials say at least 48 people were killed and 79 others were wounded.

Spokesman Farhan Haq delivered the UN Secretary-General's statement, condemning the attack.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) FARHAN HAQ, DEPUTY SPOKESMAN FOR THE SECRETARY-GENERAL, SAYING:

The Secretary-General is outraged by the frequency and brutality of attacks against educational institutions in the north of the country and reiterates his demand for an immediate cessation to these abominable crimes.... The Secretary-General reiterates his firm conviction that no objective justifies wanton violence against civilians."

No one has immediately claimed responsibility for the attack.
