Germany marks 25 years since the fall of the Berlin Wall

Chancellor Angela Merkel visits the Berlin Wall memorial, as Germany marks 25 years since the fall of the concrete barrier in a peaceful revolution.

Merkel and several others dignitaries place flowers at the remains of the wall that once stood as a symbol of the Cold War.

Merkel, who was then a 35-year-old scientist in Communist East Berlin says the fall of the wall is a triumph of the human spirit.

(SOUNDBITE) (German) GERMAN CHANCELLOR, ANGELA MERKEL, SAYING:

"It showed that we have the power to shape our destiny and make things better. That is the message of the fall of the Wall. It is directed at us in Germany, but also at others in Europe and the world, especially to people in Ukraine, in Syria, Iraq and other regions where human rights are threatened or violated."

The commemorations in Berlin have drawn thousands to the once-divided city-- many recall the momentous day.
