In a major departure from previous roles Kevin Spacey plays the villain in the latest ‘Call of Duty’ videogame.

The Oscar-winning actor – who had never himself played a video game before – said it was exciting to venture into this new world.

“One of the things I’ve always tried to do – and that I love doing – is to do things that I haven’t done, to step down a road that’s unfamiliar. I’ve never been one of those people who’s always walked the straight and narrow and did the safe things. I’ve always sort of been interested in a little bit of disruption, a little bit of chaos,” said Spacey.

‘Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare’ envisions a dark future where private military corporations are more powerful than governments, and soldiers fight for the highest bidder.

Spacey plays Jonathan Irons, one of the most powerful men in the world who heads a large private military corporation. He said it was a unique experience for him because the script was made up of concepts and ideas rather than solid dialogue.

“Normally if you accept a television show or a movie or a play, you have a full script, you know exactly what you’re going to be doing. In this case, it really was, ‘Here’s an idea of what we think we want this character to be like, and here’s some things we’ve written, what do you think and where should we go?’ And I’d have to say it’s one of the first times in my experience as an actor that I’ve accepted something without actually knowing what it was going to be,” he said.

It has been described as one of the most sophisticated examples of the so-called “performance capture” technique, which allows software to record voice and body work at the same time.

Special equipment was used to capture Spacey’s movements and facial expressions to create a realistic virtual version of himself.

The ‘Call of Duty’ series is one of the most successful video game franchises ever. ‘Call of Duty’:Advanced Warfare’ is out now in stores around the globe.
