Republicans seize control of U.S. Senate

Republicans have seized control of the U.S. Senate.

The party rolled up big victories in Tuesday's midterm elections...

...including Mitch McConnell in Kentucky, who will now replace Democrat Harry Reid as Senate majority leader.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) SENATOR MITCH MCCONNELL SAYING:

"Friends this experiment with big government has lasted long enough. Its time to go in a new direction."

Republican Senate candidates also picked up Democratic seats in Montana, Colorado, West Virginia, South Dakota and Arkansas.

Before the night began, Republicans needed to gain six seats in order to take over the 100-member Senate.

The party will now have a majority in both chambers of Congress for the first time since elections in 2006.

For President Obama, Tuesday's results will complicate his remaining two years in office...

...forcing him to scale back his legislative agenda.
