Kurdish peshmerga forces enter Syria's Kobani

Smoke rises over the Syrian border town of Kobani...

...after Iraqi Kurdish peshmerga forces moved in Friday to help Syrian Kurds fend off Islamic State insurgents.

The 150-man force arrived from Turkey -- making it the first time Turkey has allowed ground troops from outside Syria to reinforce Syrian Kurds.

Earlier, U.S.-led air strikes around Kobani -- aimed at IS targets -- appeared to help pave the way.

The town has been besieged for more than 40 days, as the Islamist militants -- who have already seized large swathes of Iraq and Syria -- try to take control of the Turkish border region.
