Carmalisha wants to know how often to straighten your hair while also preventing heat damage.

#1 Always deep condition and use a protein moisturizer before using heat

Deep conditioning and using a protein product is absolutely mandatory when you plan on straightening your hair. Without the preparation of a deep conditioning product, your hair will have a difficult time withstand your heat usage even if you are using a safe temperature on your hair. If you need help figuring out which deep conditioners and protein products are best for your hair, refer to my book The Black Hair Manual.

#2 Never go over 350 degrees to prevent heat damage

Going over 350 degrees encourages the possibility of heat damaged hair even though you have prepared your hair with a deep conditioning treatment and applied a protein products to prepare your hair. In some cases, going over 350 degrees may be best for some but it is not suggested. Test patch an indiscreet area of your head to figure out how to get your straightest hair at the lowest heat setting possible to lower your chances of acquiring high heat usage when straightening your hair. Below are the recommended flat irons I suggest when you want consistent heat and straightening results with your hair.

#3 Use a an oil based heat protect for infrequent use

If you will not straighten your hair frequently, then using an oil based heat protectant will offer enough protection without the need of using silicones. When using natural oils to serve as a heat protectant, you have to make sure that you are not using high heat or frequent heat usage because these oils will not provide enough protection in this case. Below are a list of suggested natural oils for infrequent heat usage.

Virgin Cold Pressed Grapeseed Oil (most preferred) http://goo.gl/eBh7gY
Virgin Cold Pressed Olive Oil http://goo.gl/TClCNc
Virgin Cold Pressed Argan Oil http://goo.gl/CFql47

#4Use a silicone heat protectant for infrequent usage

Using silicones get a bad rap within the natural hair community because they aren't easily removed unless you use a deep cleansing shampoo to remove these kinds of silicones. Silicones that are no water soluble offer the greatest level of protection from heat damage but using them often results in chronic breakage and product buildup because these silicones are pretty resistant to water. These are to be used sparingly and with your best interests in mind.
