The President of Zambia, Michael Sata, has died in hospital in London while being treated for an undisclosed illness.

A Zambian cabinet spokesman confirmed the news that the southern African nation’s 77-year-old leader had died on Tuesday night.

Earlier this month the government said that President Sata had left the country for medical treatment abroad, accompanied by his wife and family members, without giving more details.

Concern over his health had been mounting since June when he disappeared from public view.

In Sata’s absence, last week Zambia celebrated the 50th anniversary of its independence from British colonial rule.

Africa’s second-largest copper producer enjoys political stability and solid economic growth, but still struggles with poverty and unemployment.
