Nerves had the upper hand in the early hours of this morning, as competitors approached the start line afloat a barge for the first stunning day of New Zealand’s new multisport race that is Red Bull Defiance. Competitors prepared to tackle seven individual punishing stages over two days, negotiating a total distance of 153.25km and elevation of 4418m.

Fresh southerly winds and low temperatures challenged the first stage of the race.
