Help is on the way to war-torn Kobani.

The U.S. has air-dropped arms to Syrian Kurds battling Islamic State near the besieged Syrian town -- the first such delivery in more than a month of fighting.

Governor of the Iraqi Kurdish city of Arbil, Nowzad Hadi, says the shipment will be key in the fight against Islamic State or Daesh.

"The supply of arms will change the equation and will save Kobani and prevent it from falling into the hands of Daesh."

It's also welcome news on the street.

(SOUNDBITE) (Kurdish) KURDISH CITIZEN, KAFI MUSTAFA, SAYING:

"Kurds are proud to see America supporting them against Islamic State terrorist forces. We are very happy that they have sent arms and we hope that they will send more weapons."

Kobani is besieged by Islamic State fighters to the east, west and south and bordered to the north by Turkey.
