Syrians fleeing fierce fighting in Kobani, find refuge in Turkey

The fiercest fighting in days shakes Kobani.

Inside sources say Islamic State militants attacked Kurdish fighters with mortars and car bombs overnight. Some shells, they say, fell inside Turkey.

This, as U.S.-led coalition jets step up air strikes on Islamic State targets.

While Ankara has so far held off on military action, Turkey has let in more than 250,000 people fleeing the recent violence.

People like these, who now call the shelter home.

... U.N. Humanitarian Chief Valerie Amos says is a short-term solution:

(SOUNDBITE) (English) U.N. HUMANITARIAN CHIEF VALERIE AMOS, SAYING:

"People need to be housed and sheltered and this is a transition to a more settled camp situation."

The UN Refugee Agency has been working closely with Turkish authorities to care for them.

But with 1.3 million Syrian refugees inside the country, Turkey says the financial strain should not be theirs alone.
