Passengers on an American Airlines Flight were left shaken yesterday after the interior of a Boeing 757 started to crumble while in the air.

The flight had departed from San Francisco and was bound for Dallas when the incident occurred. Reportedly the wall panels inside the cabin began caving in.

One traveler remarked “All of a sudden you hear this 'pop pop pop pop' and a ripping sound. It sounded like we were going to lose the front part of the plane.”

The problem happened shortly after the plane took off at 1 in the afternoon. Those who were onboard reportedly screamed and called out to the crew to alert them of the issue.

A passenger said the pilot didn’t turn around and head back to San Francisco until about 45 minutes after the walls started falling apart. The plane landed at about 2:15 p.m. and none of the 190 people onboard were injured.

The cracking of the wall panels is said to have been associated with pressurization, however the oxygen masks did not deploy and there was no reduction in the amount of pressure inside the cabin.

Aviation safety experts have emphasized that the panels are only for cosmetic purposes and are not part of the plane’s actual structure.

The Federal Aviation Administration is working with staffers at American Airlines to determine and correct the issue before the aircraft will be permitted to fly again.
