Google Street View Uses Camel Instead Of Car For Liwa Desert

In order to capture the Liwa Desert in Abu Dhabi, Google had a camel carry one of its cameras to capture the landscape.

Google Street View has covered much of the earth, giving anyone the ability to get a glimpse of the world through their computer.

Now Abu Dhabi’s Liwa Desert in the United Arab Emirates has been captured, but by less conventional means.

Google mounted its Street View Trekker to a camel's back, enabling the pristine desert to be photographed.

The Trekker is a backpack mounted camera capable of taking 360-degree photos.

It's used when Google's cars are unable to reach, or travel through, a certain location.

The camel is used to traversing the desert making it the ideal candidate for this sort of task.

The animal's shadow is featured in many of the images, which adds a level of uniqueness and authenticity for Street View users.

While the camera and mount seem large, it's been carried by a human before for mapping other hard to reach areas.

The Trekker has been previously used to capture the Grand Canyon and Canada's Arctic Territory.
