Sophia Loren, Italy's national icon, turns 80 in Mexico with exhibition

Italy's eternal diva Sophia Loren turns 80 this Saturday (September 20) and a new exhibition is set to open in Mexico City in her honour.

The film icon was on hand to officially open the "Sophia Loren Mexico" show even though this task proved a little challenging for the actress.

The exhibition traces Loren's rise to stardom, from her discovery aged 14 to later becoming Italy's greatest export after pasta as one critic once put it.

Loren said she was moved by the exhibit which includes a number of items related to her film career.

The actress, who grew up near Naples, told journalists that, despite her advancing years, she still had plenty of life and ideas left in her.
