Runners are always trying to improve their speed and distance.

Now researchers from Arizona State University’s Human Machine Integration laboratory have developed a jetpack that can help runners go faster.

They named the project 4MM, because their goal is to help soldiers run a mile in four minutes while carrying all their gear.

The current world record stands at one mile in just over three minutes and 43 seconds, but the average person can never come close to that, unless they have some extra help from something like the 4MM.

So far, researchers haven’t achieved their goal of making the four minute mile accessible to everyone, but they have been able to reduce the average running time by 18 seconds.

The jet backpack weighs almost eleven and a half pounds, with specially designed straps and back supports to evenly distribute the thrust and load of the electric ducted fan, which gives the runner extra momentum.

With funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, the researchers say that the 4MM could help save human lives by allowing soldiers to move more quickly in and out of potentially dangerous situations.
