Syrian child treated at Israeli hospital

A twelve-year-old Syrian boy is among a growing number of Syrians being treated at this hospital in northern Israel.

He was injured when a shell exploded near his home outside of Damascus, says a close family friend who took the boy to Lebanon for treatment. Realizing they needed more advanced treatment, the friend then brought him by donkey to an Israeli military post, where soldiers led them to the hospital.

Dr. Yosef Pikel is the head of opthamology at Ziv Centre.

SOUNDBITE: Head Ophthalmology at Ziv Centre Doctor Yosef Pikel saying:

"Well, he is in a very bad position. He lost his right eye. He was primary operated in Beirut, and then he came to us, to a retinal surgery, which was quite difficult and we hope that he has some chance of vision, but we are not sure of that because the gravity of the injury was very bad."

He also has a broken hand and leg. Staff here say they're working to try and keep him comfortable.
