Rains kill nearly 100 in Indian administered Kashmir

Heavy rains in Indian-administered Kashmir wash away homes, buildings and cars.

Scores of people have been killed in the flooding caused by the incessant downpour.

Thousands have been carried to safety after their houses were submerged.

(SOUNDBITE) (English) CHIEF MINISTER OF INDIA'S NORTHERN STATE OF JAMMU AND KASHMIR, OMAR ABDULLAH, SAYING:

"We have requisitioned the army to come out in aid to civil administration. Army boats are supplementing whatever efforts the civil government is able to put in. Now that the rain has eased, we hope that water levels will start going down. Once the water levels go down then the next challenge is to begin the process of rehabilitating those people who have been affected by the rains."

Rescuers in the Jammu area are struggling to recover bodies from this bus, which was swept away by flashfloods.

It was carrying about 50 members of a wedding party. The bride and groom are among those feared dead.
