Caddy Adzuba
has won the Asturias Foundation’s Concorde Prize for 2014.
The Asturias are the Spanish-speaking world’s equivalent of the Nobel Awards and the Concorde Prize is its peace accolade.
The announcement was made by the president of the jury, Javier Fernandez Fernandez, in the Spanish city of Oviedo.
He described Adzuba as “a symbol of the peaceful fight against violence against women and the poor, and discrimination” which, he said, was “a dangerous and generous task”.
Adzuba is a much-lauded campaigner for human rights and press freedom in the war zones of the Democratic Republic of Congo. She has been at the forefront of the battle against sexual violence against women in a region where it is estimated that an average of 40 women per day have been raped since the conflict erupted in 1996.
Adzuba works for Radio Okapi, which was set up by the UN’s mission in the Democratic Republic of Congo, MONUC, and which broadcasts throughout the country.
She is also a member of the East Congo Women’s Media Association, which has helped bring allegations of sexual violence and other abuses to the attention of the International Criminal Court and the United States Senate.
