UKRAINE: WEB USERS CALL FOR INTERNATIONAL ASSISTANCE
Thousands of Ukrainians have taken to the web in recent days posting under the #UkraineUnderAttack or #RussiaInvadedUkraine hashtags sharing their concerns over the increased presence of Russian troops across their country. A lot of the messages are calling on the international community to intervene and force the Russian authorities to end all operations in Ukraine immediately.
Indeed, many, including the Prime Minister of Ukraine have appealed for urgent intervention from the UN, the United States or the European Union. Web users say Moscow should be sanctioned for its actions in Ukraine and urge the international community not to turn a blind eye to the current conflict.
And it seems leaders of the European Union have listened. Meeting in Brussels this week, they issued an ultimatum on Saturday, giving Russia one week to reverse course and withdraw all troops from Ukraine or to face a new round of sanctions from the EU.
Ukrainian web users have hailed the threat of fresh sanctions, although some feel this is not enough. These Twitter posts say the international community must now take more concrete action to stop Russia`s military offensive in Ukraine. Concerned citizens are suggesting one week is too long as the situation is getting steadily worse.
