A 22-year-old man is amazingly still alive after a close encounter with a Red Line train in Washington, DC. The incident unfolded at about 9:15 p.m. on Tuesday.

Metro Transit Police were dispatched to the station after reports came in about a man who was intimidating riders. When officers arrived on scene and approached the suspect, he quickly jumped off the platform and said he wanted to die.

Right away platform warning lights started blinking, which indicated a train was coming. A witness waved his arms to attract the attention of the train operator, while the cops scrambled, presumably to get help.

The operator swiftly activated the emergency braking system.

He was yanked out of the way just in time, because it appears as though the train was only inches away from his body. Fortunately he was uninjured, but he was taken to a local hospital to undergo a mental health examination.
