Near miss for ancient city of Messini as Greek wildfire is brought under control

A large wildfire which broke out on Monday in southern Greece has been brought under control but not before encircling the ancient city of Messini.

The blaze tore through around 2000 hectares of forestland and olive groves near Kalamata which is 250 km south of Athens.

Residents of four villages were evacuated as a precaution.

Each summer, high temperatures and arson cause numerous wildfires in Greece but this year the number has been 25 percent less than in 2013.
