Leaders from Kyiv and Moscow meet in Minsk amid reports of escalating tension in eastern Ukraine

Leaders of the European Union, Ukraine and Russia are in talks at the Palace of Independence in Minsk. Their official agenda: a summit on energy security.

However, the meeting comes at a time of rising tension over Ukraine’s military campaign against pro-Russian separatists in the east of the country.

As such, Angelina Kariakina, our correspondent in the Belarussian capital, expects there to be additions to the programme:

“The meeting in Minsk should also pave the way for dialogue on how to resolve the situation in Donbass, eastern Ukraine,” she says. “However, no one expects these negotiations to be easy, especially with reports from Ukraine of an escalation in the conflict.”
