Gandhi director Richard Attenborough dies at 90

British film actor and director Richard Attenborough has died at the age of 90 after a long illness.
On hearing of his death Prime Minister David Cameron described him as one of cinema’s greats.
His career spanned six decades. He first made his mark as an actor in films such as ‘Brighton Rock’ and the World War ll thriller ‘The Great Escape’, but he later turned his hand to directing.
His best known film in that role was perhaps ‘Gandhi’ which won eight Oscars including best picture and best director.
Younger generations will know him from his appearance in the science fiction adventure ‘Jurassic Park’.
Along with his brother the naturalist David Attenborough, he was one of Britain’s best-known screen celebrities.
But he also experienced great sorrow when he lost both his daughter and 15-year-old granddaughter in the Boxing Day tsunami 2004.
For his contribution to cinema and for his extensive work for charity he was made a life peer in 1993.
