Donetsk residents flee Ukraine for Moscow

Residents in the rebel-held eastern Ukrainian city of Donetsk have packed their bags and are getting on a train bound for Russia.

They've been at the mercy of Ukrainian forces and their intensified shelling -- and they say they've had enough.

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) ELENA FROLOVA, DONETSK RESIDENT, SAYING:

"It is impossible to live here. There is no electricity, no water. And there is shelling every day. How can we live this way?...For now we have a place to go. We have relatives in Oryol. After that, I don't know what we are going to do."

Meanwhile, black smoke rises above a telecommunications building in the separatist and self-proclaimed "People's Republic" of Donetsk, after it was hit by shells from Ukrainian forces.

The shelling lasted for some eight hours on Sunday, local residents said.

The city faces a shortage of food, water and electricity, as the central government in the capital Kiev attempts to retake control.
