Thai surrogate vows to keep Down's syndrome baby

This baby has Down's syndrome, a congenital heart condition and a lung infection.

He sits with his twenty one year old surrogate mother in a hospital just outside Bangkok.

Pattaramon Janbua, she was paid to carry twins by an Australian couple.

When the babies were born last year, they rejected Gammy but took his healthy twin sister.

(SOUNDBITE) (Thai) THAI SURROGATE MOTHER, PATTARAMON JANBUA, 21, SAYING:

"Only the (local) agency, doctors, and his parents knew that he had Down's syndrome from the fourth month. But during the seventh month of pregnancy, the agency called me and told me that the parents wanted me to terminate the child because he had Down's syndrome. I told them it's already seven months, I'm not going to, I can't do it."

It was supposed to be a financial agreement that would ease the strain on Pattaramon, who also has two other children.

Instead she was not paid all the money promised and was left holding the baby.
