Car bomb attacks kill 21 in Baghdad

Residents inspect the damage left by car bombs that killed 21 in the predominantly Shi'ite neighborhoods of Sadr City and al-Ameen on Thursday (July 31).
One bomb exploded near restaurants and shops in Sadr City, killing 16 people, while five were killed by another car bomb in al-Ameen, police said.
The attacks on the predominantly Shi'ite districts of the Iraqi capital Baghdad took place on Wednesday (July 30).
No group claimed responsibility for the blasts. But Sunni insurgents, some of them linked to al Qaeda, are widely blamed for a surge in violence in the past year apparently aimed at undermining the Shi'ite-led government and provoking a return to all-out sectarian strife.
According to the United Nations more than 1,500 people, mainly civilians, have been killed and roughly the same number injured in fighting and other violence in Iraq in June as Sunni militants swept through the north of the country.
