The Houston Fire Department recently responded to a dramatic scene where a crane operator was left seriously injured at the top of the machine.

The staffer had slipped and fell about 10 feet on a platform as he was descending a protected ladder. He was left hurt and stuck on the crane about 200 feet or 20 stories high.

The incident occurred at approximately 4 on a recent Friday afternoon. Houston firefighters rushed to the scene and climbed up to the top of the crane.

The rescue crew utilized the crane itself to pull a Stokes basket up to the man. They loaded him into the basket, pulled it over a railing and slowly lowered him and a brave firefighter back to the ground. The entire operation took just over an hour.

Fire Captain Bob Schlieter talked about the victim commenting “He was unconscious for a few seconds, but then regained consciousness complaining of neck and back pain.”

Following the rescue, the man was taken to an area hospital. He was reportedly conscious and alert at the time.
