Costa Concordia, the Italian cruse ship that ran aground on the island of Giglio, is finally on its way to a salvage yard.

The accident occurred in 2012 when the ship struck a reef and capsized. 32 passengers were killed.
Ever since it’s been the focus of one of the largest salvage operations in history.
Last September the vessel was finally positioned upright and secured with steel stabilizing containers.
Those containers double as flotation devices making it possible for the ship to be refloated and sent along to a scrap yard in Genoa.
Thus far the mission is said to be going according to plan, but some say they won’t call it a success until it’s safely arrived at its destination.
Once it does get there, crews will go to work removing the furnishings and equipment from the ship.
Now that the coastal area in Giglio has been cleared, the plans are to rebuild the reef destroyed by the crash.
