Muscovites leave apologetic messages outside Dutch embassy

Moscow residents lay flowers at a makeshift memorial outside the Dutch Embassy...

...And light candles to honor those who died when a Malaysian Airliner crashed in eastern Ukraine, an area held by pro-Russian separatists.

None of the 298 passengers survived.

One visitor called it "an awful tragedy".

(SOUNDBITE) (Russian) VISITOR TO MOSCOW DUTCH EMBASSY, NO NAME GIVEN, SAYING:

"So many people died, medics among them. But it doesn't matter. And I am convinced that it's our payback for Crimea. This needs to be stopped at any price."

U.S. officials said Washington strongly suspects that the Boeing 777 was shot down by a missile fired by Ukrainian rebels backed by Moscow.

They have denied any involvement and are pointing the finger at Ukraine.
