A young mountain climber from the U.S. was killed on Monday and his friend seriously injured in an avalanche in the Peruvian Andes.

23-year-old Kile Colleman Kennedy and his friend 22-year-old John Collins were climbing the El Piramide mountain when they were buried by the avalanche.

Collins managed to break free despite his injuries and call for help.

SOUNDBITE: (Spanish) HEAD OF MOUNTAIN POLICE TEAM, ROCIO MAYHUA, SAYING:

"John Collins told us that his friend, the citizen Colleman was still on the mountain and he thought that he was already dead."

Mountain police discovered Kennedy's body on Tuesday.

In June, two Italian mountain climbers were killed in the same area, which is home to some of the tallest mountains in Peru.
