Costa Concordia wreck removal: second stage underway

The second stage of the Costa Concordia wreck removal began on Tuesday and is going well, according to the head of the salvage operation.

The giant cruise ship should be ready for the final refloating stage on Thursday.

The entire operation to remove the Concordia from the reef and float it to Genoa will cost 1.5 billion euros, according to Costa Crociere CEO Michael Thanm.

The liner struck a reef when it came too close to Giglio Island in January 2012 and capsized, killing 32 people.
