Around 50 pooches took part in the annual Surfdog Competition, sponsored by Petco.

At stake was a 250-dollar store gift card and, of course, bragging rights.

According to one canine surfing trainer, some dogs are just naturally better at riding the waves than others.

He believes golden retrievers often do well, as they love the water. Bulldogs also have an advantage due to their low center of gravity and general determination.

Inborn talent or not, there are some special considerations that need to be addressed before sending a dog out to hang ten.

Canine life vests are highly recommended, as the surf is a powerful force and can pull a dog down in seconds.

The board itself can also give a dog an edge. Models with soft tops or traction pads are considered best. That way the surfers can sink their claws in, increasing their chances of staying on.
