Former Soviet Foreign Minister Eduard Shevardnadze has died at the age of 86.

Shevardnadze straddled the world stage as Soviet President Mikhail Gorbachev’s number two.

On his watch the Berlin Wall fell and the Cold War thawed.

In 1992 Shevardnadze became president of the newly independent Georgia.

In 2003 he was chased out of parliament and removed from office during the “Rose Revolution”.

The opposition alleged voting irregularities during parliamentary polls which led to his fall and subsequent retirement.
