Tensions high among Palestinians in Jerusalem

Emotions are running high among Palestinians in Jerusalem following the burial of murdered teenager Mohammed Abu Khdeir.

Our correspondent, Luis Carballo, spoke to some of the mourners, many of whom expressed rage against the Jewish settlers and spoke of a need for revenge.

“I am here because the Jews are killing our people on a daily basis,” one woman cried. “They kill children. They kill women. Why did they kill an innocent child? A day ago, they tried to kill a woman, her daughter and her son… Why?”

Prior to the funeral, Mohammed’s body was carried for burial through East Jerusalem, wrapped in a Palestinian flag.

Security surrounding the funeral was tight, with thousands of Israeli forces deployed to oversee the procession.

Some mourners expressed a desire to march from the teenager’s home region of Shuafat to the Al Aqsa mosque, but said the police presence was too heavy.

Arab-Israeli MP Ahmed Tibi accompanied Mohammed Abu Khdeir’s family to the funeral ceremony on Friday.

The sixteen-year-old was abducted from outside his father’s shop on Wednesday. His burned remains were found in a forest a few hours after he went missing.

The incident sparked clashes between masked Palestinians and Israeli police.
