In Shuafat, a neighbourhood of East Jerusalem relatives of the murdered Palestinian teenager have begun preparations for his funeral.

There is concern the burial may prompt further violence, when the body of Mohammed Abu Khdeir is finally returned by Israeli authorities.

Speaking to euronews the mother of the dead 17-year-old said: “I hope no mother will have to face what I’m going through now. I want people and the leaders to make a stand, to put an end to these kinds of acts so no other woman suffers like this.’‘

Despite the storm surrounding his death, the family of the teenager said they plan to celebrate his life.

The young man’s father said:
‘‘It is very hard, very hard. My heart is sad and my eyes cry for my son. I haven’t slept in two days.’‘

A cousin of the teenager said: ‘‘When we receive a martyr it is a special funeral unlike any other. The ceremony is a celebration of the person’s life.’‘

The murder of the young man has been condemned on all sides of the political and religious divide in the region. Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas has accused Jewish settlers of carrying out the killing while Israeli Premier Benjamin Netanyahu described the teenager’s death as ‘despicable’.
