Portugal is celebrating 800 years of its language.

Among the oldest documents written in Portuguese is the last will of King Alfonso II, drawn up in June 2014, and which has been chosen as the reference point for the commemorations.

This official document marked the use of Portuguese as an official language, now spoken by nearly 250 million people worldwide.

Events marking the occasion have included 800 children launching 800 balloons as a symbol of solidarity.
