Police in Southern California are looking for those responsible for killing approximately 50 peacocks. Over the duration of two years, dozens of peacocks have turned up dead in an equestrian community.

The peafowl were killed either by a BB gun, poison or arrows. Some of the peacocks had been hit by cars.

Lieutenant Cesar Perea elaborated on the BB pellet and arrow deaths stating “It really shows a high level of violence in the person that's doing it. Just based on the arrows that were found — the trajectory and the type of weapon that was used — these people are walking right to the animal and shooting it at point blank range.”

The Indian peafowls arrived in the area in the early 20th century by the former U.S. Secretary of the Treasury. His 16 peacocks grew into a flock.

Although many residents say the peacocks are beautiful, they admit the colorful creatures damage roofs, peck at cars and leave feces all over the place. Despite the problems they bring, killing a peacock in the state is a felony. No suspects have yet been identified but investigators say they have leads.
