Ukraine’s President Poroshenko has consulted his defence and security chiefs following the shooting down of a military transport plane killing all 49 people on board. Sunday will be an official day of mourning.

Kyiv blamed “Kremlin-backed insurgents” for their armed forces’ single largest loss of life since the crisis began.

The Il-76 was hit by an anti-aircraft missile and heavy machine-gun fire as it was coming in to land at Luhansk airport. Fighting in the city continues today, and is also reported in Donetsk and Mariupol, which the government claimed it had retaken on Friday.

Mariupol is seeing police special forces and national guard units involved in the thick of the action, alongside irregular militia units.

One took 32 alleged pro-Russian separatists prisoner, and says they will be turned over to the authorities for questioning. However they appeared to have some questions of their own , and were none too particular about how they asked them as the held the men in detention.
