A recent college graduate has stirred up some controversy with a picture that she posted online of herself breast-feeding her 3-month-old child at the California State University, Long Beach graduation ceremony.

25-year-old Karlesha Thurman posted the photo on the Facebook page for the group Black Women Do Breastfeed, which is a support group for African-American mothers that breastfeed their children.

Then the picture went viral, attracting both positive and negative attention from people online before the young woman featured in the photo decided to remove it.

While many people are supportive of women’s right to breast feed their child in public, other people think it is inappropriate and should be done in private.

Thurman is quoted as saying: “I didn’t even know there was a big controversy about breast-feeding in public until all of this happened. I honestly thought that as a society, people were more understanding to breast-feeding and understood the importance of breast-feeding,.”

According to Doctor Lori Feldman-Winter, a pediatrician at Cooper University Hospital in Camden, New Jersey, African-American women have the lowest rates of breast-feeding compared to other races and ethnic groups in the United States.
